A Nature-Responsive Home for Mr. Balaji & Mrs. Anupama's Family
Architect: Ar. Nithya
Contractor: Mr.Veeramani
Built-up Area: 1,270 sq. ft.
Located within the serene setting of Universal Farm, this 1,270 sq. ft. residence was thoughtfully designed for Balaji and Anupama as a home that reflects simplicity, warmth, and a deep connection to nature. The design embraces the tranquility of the farm landscape while expressing a contemporary yet timeless architectural language.
Design Philosophy
The vision for this home was to create a structure that harmonizes with its natural surroundings rather than overpowering them. The architectural approach emphasizes raw material expression, contextual sensitivity, and long-term durability.
Exposed concrete formwork and exposed brickwork were incorporated to retain a natural, earthy character. By allowing materials to remain honest and unfinished, the house celebrates texture, craftsmanship, and authenticity. These materials not only enhance the aesthetic quality but also ensure durability and minimal maintenance.
For enhanced safety and longevity, steel doors and windows were used, providing strength, security, and resistance to environmental wear.
Planning & Spatial Experience
The residence is designed with an emphasis on openness and spatial flow. The planning moves beyond conventional layouts to create interconnected living spaces that feel expansive and breathable.
• More openings have been introduced throughout the house. • Expansive windows frame views of the surrounding greenery. • Sectional variations create dynamic volumes and enhance visual depth. • A large balcony space has been incorporated into the design. • An interesting play of light is created through the skylight above the staircase well.
Since the house is surrounded by farm and garden land, it is built on a raised platform. This elevated plinth protects the structure from surface water during rain, improves ventilation, and strengthens its relationship with the landscape.
This spatial strategy ensures that every area of the home remains visually connected to nature.
Light, Ventilation & Skylights
Natural light and ventilation play a central role in the design. Strategically placed skylights bring daylight deep into the interiors, enhancing brightness and creating ever-changing light patterns throughout the day.
The alignment of openings promotes effective cross-ventilation, allowing fresh air to circulate naturally throughout the house. This reduces dependency on artificial cooling systems and improves overall comfort.
A Home in Harmony
The Residence at Universal Farm is more than just a dwelling—it is a calm, breathable retreat designed around the lifestyle of Balaji and Anupama family. Through thoughtful planning, durable material choices, and a raised, site-responsive design, the home stands as a reflection of architecture that is sustainable, contextual, secure, and deeply rooted in its environment.
